IHSAA News Release

June 11, 2011

Defending state champion Brebeuf Jesuit along with individual champion Patrick Rodgers of Avon both return to the field and a chance to repeat as the 75th Annual IHSAA Boys Golf State Finals begin Tuesday at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.

The defending champion Braves, currently ranked third in the state coaches poll, include three holdovers from the 2010 team that will play Tuesday – senior Jacob Gould and juniors Wil Pahud and Will Tenbarge. The team took second at both the South Grove Sectional and the Hickory Stick Regional over the last several days.

Rodgers will lead a fourth-ranked Avon team that will be looking to win its second state championship in three years this week. The Orioles will make their sixth straight appearance as a team in the state finals – the best in the field – after winning the Hickory Stick Regional earlier this week and taking runner-up honors in the Martinsville Golf Club Sectional. Rodgers did not compete in the sectional but finished tied for second at the regional with a 69 just behind teammate Keegan McKinney who fired a 68. Avon finished sixth in last year’s state competition. Rodgers will attempt to become the first repeat champion since Jeremy Wilkinson of South Bend Clay won back-to-back in 1994 and 1995 and the fourth ever to do so (Joe Campbell, Anderson; Ron Frantz, Indianapolis Broad Ripple).

Twenty-one teams advanced five golfers each and 21 individuals have moved on without their squads for a total of 126 participants representing 41 teams. The IHSAA will utilize a double wave start of threesomes with the first groups teeing off the Middle 9 course and the Road 9 course at 7:30 am ET / 6:30 am CT on Tuesday. The second group of players will begin their rounds at 12 pm ET / 11 am CT. Those teams and individuals that make the cut will return for a second day on Wednesday. The first round tee times and pairings are available here.

Top-ranked Zionsville won the South Grove Sectional and took third at the Hickory Stick Regional while No. 2 Warsaw took second at its own sectional at Stonehenge and third at the Orchard Ridge Regional to earn its third straight trip to state.

The most recent poll from the state coaches association may be accessed here.

Besides Rodgers, eight other individuals from last year’s top 25 finishers also have made their way back including Brebeuf’s Gould, who finished fourth a year ago, and Nick Grubnich of Crown Point and Sean Stone of Evansville Harrison who shared fifth.

Fort Wayne Canterbury, which won its first regional crown in winning at Orchard Ridge, along with Boone Grove (third at Beechwood) and Lafayette Central Catholic (third at Battle Ground) have each advanced to the state finals for the first time. Huntington North (second at The Players Club) also advanced to state for the first time in 14 years.

Fans and media are invited to view the progress of the state finals by visiting www.golfstat.com. The IHSAA will post the hole-by-hole scores for every player throughout the two days.
